Explore Queenstown and Central Otago
Queenstown is the ultimate alpine playground and is famous for all types of outdoor pursuits all year round. With the magnificent Lake Wakatipu as the centrepiece for the township and riverways to the north and south, on-water activities add an exciting array of options; from adrenalin-filled jet boat rides to luxury cruises and the iconic TSS Earnslaw, a historic steamship that takes cruises to the Walter Peak High Country Station for the ultimate, immersive rural experience amidst spectacular surrounds.
Adrenalin junkies and thrill seekers can get their fill with extreme activities such as bungy jumping, mountain bike tracks, paragliding and a myriad of other activities within Queenstown to get the heart thumping. There is plenty for those wanting a slightly less exhilarating but nonetheless enjoyable time; Gondola rides and luging is one of the town’s top attractions and offers extraordinary views of the town, lake and mountains.
Wine trails are also a wonderful way to while away an afternoon, with most wineries offering excellent café or restaurant cuisine. A little farther afield in Cromwell is the Highland Motorsport Park and Museum; an absolute must for car enthusiasts or those keen to experience the thrill of a ‘hot lap” as a passenger or driver. A day trip to Wanaka and Cardrona with its historic pub is a must-do for those with a few more days to spend in Queenstown.
It is highly recommended to plan ahead with so many options and some exceptional day trips. Time will disappear rather quickly!
